Borrego Springs to Host: Vintage Trailer Show March 31 thru April 1, 2012

This year's Borrego Springs Home Tour takes on a new twist: it will feature a collection of fabulous vintage trailers! The trailers will be rounded up in a semi-circle in the heart of Borrego Spring's Christmas Circle on Saturday March 31st as soon as the Farmers Market is over. Then designers Mary Ellis, Pamela Levens, Katalina Prince, Elizabeth Rodriguez & Timo Elliott will add the finishing touches to each of the trailers to make the look just right. Later, that night there will be a special fundraiser dinner,"Best of the Farmers Market" being served by Badlands Catering followed by special advanced night time viewings of the trailers. Sunday April 1st, the trailer will be on exhibit to ticket-holders.

Pinecrest Club-house Improvements Underway!

Construction at the Pinecrest Clubhouse is Under Way! The fencing around the clubhouse has removed temporarily to make room for the new construction. In addition to the shade structures that have been discussed in the past, an additional bathroom is being added which will allow for greater handicap-access. Other improvements are slated for the interior of the building to make it more open and inviting with a more modern feel.

The Eternal Appeal of Retro Lodings

Why is old-fashioned roadside architecture so appealing to us? I suspect it may have something to do with the color and vibrancy that these lodgings have - very different from the bland, boxy chain motel aesthetic that we generally find nowadays. The electric beauty of a neon sign, the faded glamour of a trailer park, the retro-chic feel of a vintage Airstream or recycled camper van are the kinds of things that chic nomads of today are looking for in their travels. Retro lodgings are unusual and unique and even a teeny bit trashy. They're little moments in time that you can curl up and sleep in. This hub will take you on a short tour of some of the hipper retro lodings in the United States. We've even included road maps so you know how to get there! Keep in mind though that these are general maps and not absolute guides - you should always check with the property before setting out.

El Cosmico is quite possibly the chicest small hotel this side of the Mississippi. Located in Marfa, Texas (a historically artistic town), El Cosmico doesn't offer guests traditional room. Instead, the small hotel consists of vintage fifties trailers (Kozy Coach from 1951 pictured above). Yes, it's a "trailer park" but who says that trailer parks must be run down, trashy places? But if you're really opposed to staying in a vintage trailer, El Cosmico also offers teepees and yurts onsite.

A lone Avion trailer from the 1970's has been placed right off the Cabrillo Highway in the gorgeous central coast of California. Only 28 feet in length, this particular trailer is recommended for couples. Because it was actually designed to be a home for nomads on the road, the trailer has a full kitchen and folding dinette table that turns into an extra bed. In a nod to its now stationary life, the trailer has been kitted out with a full bathroom (yes, that means it has a bathtub). I love that the owners haven't totally forsaken the trailer's seventies roots. Instead they've embraced it by furnishing the trailer with colorful, retro fabric patterns and design touches.

THE MUSEUM OF JURASSIC TECHNOLOGY:

I first came across the name of this extraordinary place when my friend Mitzi Pratt (NYC socialite) asked me to be meet her in what she called one of her favorite places in Los Angeles, The Museum of Jurassic Technology. After locating it in Culver City, I begin to understand why she likes it here so much. The exhibits in the museum cross the line between fact and fiction, between reality and imagination.

The collections of the museum, which was founded in 1989 and is being curated by David Hildebrand Wilson and Diana Wilson, span over three little buildings and consist of pieces from about a dozen sub-collections which are often centered around a certain subject such as belief and knowledge or personalities like Athanasius Kircher and their work. But, unlike what one might expect of a technology museum, throughout all of the exhibits, the boundaries between history and fiction, magic and reason, narrative and scientific method are in fact completely fluid (and the curators pleasurably make no effort to make things more clear, even indulge in elaborate descriptions and allusions that make it even more mysterious).
Many of the pieces consist of wonderfully crafted models and often amazing analog visual tricks for superimposing images. As a result, the whole space turns into a magical wunderkammer like I've rarely seen it, and probably one of the most astonishing approaches to the culture of art and technology on the planet.

The reason I mention this museum here is because of the outstanding exhibition I once saw there (which is part of the permanent collection) entitled, GARDEN OF EDEN ON WHEELS. This is a collection of model mobile homes and travel trailers which glow and flicker in a darkened room, complete with sounds of a.m. radios and t.v.s playing from within and the distant sounds of crickets and campfires.

"The house trailer is, of course, but a sub-set of the larger age-old category of mobile dwelling. From the Basque sheepherder tent/coat and Bedouin woven goat hair "blacktent" to Mongolian yurts, human ingenuity has created an astonishing array of portable dwellings. However, in America, it was the migratory worker and seasonal factory worker, tacking together small masonite trailers or packing up their home built housecars and assembling in camps as early as 1920; or, the evangelist, carpenter or salesman, who built their first trailer to follow some private dream; or simply the old time "trailerite" or auto camper, a casual, cantankerous and fiercely independent soul of the teens and twenties who together caused a brand new industry, mobile home production, to emerge and flourish right out of the depths of the Great Depression."

Vintage Christmas cards are a unique and popular item to both collect and send. The holidays are truly a joyous time and the tradition of sending Christmas greetings has been going on for over a hundred years. The best thing about vintage Christmas cards is that you can be sure that you are sending out well wishes in a manner that will be appreciated, remembered and displayed proudly.

Where to find vintage Christmas cards

From flea markets to eBay, there are plenty of unused vintage Christmas cards still around. Occasionally warehouse finds of great quantities of Christmas cards from the 50s and 60s still turn up. Large companies and printers have stored these for decades and eventually they find their way onto the open market. The great thing about finding and buying these old store stock seasonal greeting cards is the cost. Often, an unopened box of vintage Christmas cards and envelopes can be purchased for less than the price of the modern (and often bland) equivalents. How great is it that a truly unique statement can be purchased for such a small sum? The people receiving the cards will be shocked to get an authentic 40 or 50-year-old card and it will make a great conversation starter at Christmas parties, too.

Pinecrest Retreat is emerging as a leader in the vintage trailer movement. Combining the best of the new and the old, park owners Frank and Kathleen are mindful of keeping the proper balance. Timo visits The Shady Dell!

There are lots of great places in the American southwest to see vintage travel trailers, but two places stand out for the quality and volume: Pinecrest and The Shady Dell. After hearing a great deal about Shady Dell, the author of this blog had an opportunity to visit this iconic location. The collection of trailers were laid out museum style, side by side. The shimmering metal vessels glimmered in the Arizona sun, each available for rental by the day. Pinecrest differs from the Shady Dell in this regard, as most of Pinecrests trailers are privately owned and maintained (although a few trailers are available to rent by the night). Another notable difference is that Pinecrest sites are located in and amongst mature pines, poplars and cedar trees, with lots of private land to hike and explore.
Pinecrest and The Shady Dell are each special places to enjoy the best of mobile mid-century modern design in unique American settings.

Pinecrest to be included in History of Julian film project.
Pincecrest member and late blooming filmmaker, Teri Brewer, is working on a short film focusing on the Cuyamacas and San Diego back country and how the cultural landscape and local archaeology there has been shaped by fire. As part of this film, which is actually a pilot for a longer film project, she would like to include a little bit of information on Pinecrest and its history with fires and how it came through. She has some photos of Pinecrest today of course, but wonders whether there are any photographs or video of Pinecrest just after fire came through? If anyone has digital photos of this nature that Teri could use she would very much appreciate it. In order for them to be used in the pilot film, however, she would need to get digital images via email by September 10. But if that deadline passes and you have some good photos, please send them along any way as she could still use these for the master project.

According to recent news stories, Cal Trans will be removing the three crosses that are located across the road from the Pinecrest entrance at the scenic overlook. Due to the fact that no private structures are allowed on public thruways, these long standing icons will be relocated to another hillside on private property. No information was given as to the date of the removal. Reaction is expected to be mixed.

A Handmade Camera And A Vintage Trailer: On The Road To A Lost America

David Michael Kennedy is a 60-year-old art photographer from New Mexico who took an extraordinary cross-country journey to rediscover what he thought was a lost America. He shares his photos here, and responds to a few questions.

In the '70s and '80s, David Michael Kennedy lived in New York City, shooting portraits of music icons like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Muddy Waters for magazine and album covers. He moved to New Mexico in 1986, where he focused on Native American culture. Today he lives in a 200-year-old adobe house in the tiny agricultural village of El Rito in northern New Mexico.
But for two years beginning in 2004, Kennedy wandered back roads photographing preachers, crawfishermen, RV-ers, buffaloes, longhorns, cowboys and mystics.
He and his then girlfriend, Heather Howard, and a res dog named Henry Crow Dog packed up in a 1959 Airstream trailer outfitted with a wet darkroom. He took all his photographs with a handmade 4x5 camera using Polaroid positive/negative film, which he developed in the trailer then made contact prints using the archaic platinum palladium process prized by collectors and museums.

John Burnett: Why did you take this trip across the country?
David Michael Kennedy: I got divorced, my house burned down and I didn't know what to do. It was March 2004 and I was confused about where America was going. I was watching the news and it didn't make sense. It seemed to me America was broken and the people were a mess. I decided to go out and rediscover America and myself.

What did the people you photographed teach you?
At the end of the trip, most of what I felt is there was still a spirit within the people. Once I got out there, I found people who were reinventing their lives, who were not going to strip malls, who were not feeding that consumer monster. The deeper we penetrated into the back roads of America — what I think of as the real America — the less I found of that.

"We camped in Ochlockonee River State Park in Florida and every day I'd walk by this tent and there was a Madonna, an old car and nobody around. It fascinated me. After a couple of days, Randy crawled out of the tent. He was on a pilgrimage to a statue that was bleeding in Mississippi. He ran out of money waiting for his miracle. I gave him $20 for gas and he went down the road to see the statue."

There were people who didn't need to text, there were people who didn't need iPods, there were people who actually had coffee pots you could take apart and fix when they broke. We met one old man and his wife; 50 years ago he made an electric tractor that was still running, and he heated his entire house with solar panels that he'd made from beer cans, which he'd drunk.

Did you know where you wanted to go when you set out, or was the trip completely unscripted? We had no plan for this trip. Every morning when we woke up I'd look up at the sky and think, "Heading north today." The trip began to get scripted by the people we met.

"Sister Reiddie was a Pentecostal minister who was just amazing. When I photographed her, she couldn't decide whether she should be holding a Bible or a shotgun."

V.R. Hylton was a minister we met in Texas; we stayed with him for over a week and ended up going to his church and fishing in his lake and photographing his longhorns. V.R. told us about some old cowboy crop-dusters over in Louisiana. When we left V.R., we headed over to Louisiana to try to find the crop-dusters. Of course we made a wrong turn ... the trip was really about wrong turns.
We passed a roadside fruit stand and spent a week with the people who ran the fruit stand. They introduced us to crawfishermen and we had huge crawfish feasts. Then they introduced us to Sister Reiddie.
Tell me about the Airstream trailer.
We traveled for two years living in that vintage Airstream. It still has a 1959 lifetime warranty stuck to the closet door. We did a little modification to it so I could process film at night. Heather made blackout curtains, or we'd just park in dark places and I processed and printed in the trailer.

"We'd spent a week looking for a buffalo in Yellowstone when I came upon this one. I jumped out of the car and ran over. I set up the tripod. I got the cable release and he looked in the wide lens and froze. I did a one-second exposure, and once the shutter closed, he snorted and walked away. That was so much what the trip was about. So many subjects gave me such amazing gifts."

And I think the Airstream kind of helped. A big blue Dodge pickup with an Indian motorcycle in back, pulling this huge silver reflective trailer down the road. It definitely drew people to us. It made people interested in what we were doing.
What was it about these moments that made you go and get your camera?
They're just things that touched me. There are moments that grab me and make me say "yes." This feels right and natural and good, and I make a picture.

Pinecrest at 50: A Community with-in a Community.

Julian is a very special place, no-one could deny that. It prides itself on old time values and the strength of a community who comes together in times of adversity. Amazingly, there is a community with-in that community that shares those values and incorporates new ones. This enclave is a private retreat called Pinecrest.

Pinecrest Retreat has been around for a long, long time. In fact, it may surprise you to learn that on Labor Day of this year, Pinecrest will be celebrating its 50 year anniversary! Pinecrest is a private retreat that is home to a significant number of classic vintage trailers and a second home (get-away) to those who own them.

The park has one of the largest, solar-heated outdoor pools in Southern California, and a long history of inviting the community to share in this rich resource. In fact, for many locals, Pinecrest was the place they first learned to swim. Today the Olympic-sized pool is still enjoyed by the extended Julian community, with individual and family “Swim Club” memberships available for purchase at the club house (more information on the “Swim Club” is available at the Pinecrest website: http://www.pinecrestretreat.com/pool.shtml). The clubhouse holds dressing rooms with lockers and heated showers, and a classic little snack bar with goodies for all. The park is happy to announce that Judy Fender will be the new Pool Manager this summer! "Our pool club offers a quiet relaxing place to swim laps or practice exercises in a beautiful environment," says Kathleen Rosenow, who with her husband Frank Spevacek, has owned the retreat once used by employees of Convair and General Dynamics since 2005. What could be more inviting on a hot summer day than a sparkling swimming pool surrounded by an oak forest and mountain peaks?

Because the club house and pool are at the heart of Pinecrest, (it’s where site-holders come to sign-in and sign-out when they visit the park) it has an old time general store feel. Newsworthy items are posted on the community bulletin board and bags of ice can be had for $1.25. Conversely on days when the sunlight is shimmering on the water just right and someone is quietly lounging on a deck chair reading a New Yorker magazine, it can feel a bit more like an exclusive summer resort than a funky rustic hide-away. But it’s the right blend people who make it magic. A combination of rural firefighters and shop-keepers mixed with urban Los Angelinos and San Diegans looking for some down time give the scene a relaxed and often playful vibe.

Another part of what makes Pinecrest special is the mix of old and new, funky and sophisticated, that make it hard to put a label on. For instance, while the road ways within the park remain dusty and unpaved, owners Rosenow and Spevacek are working with an architect to build a contemporary roof-shade structure that will also incorporate new solar heating for the pool as well as a photovoltaic solar system for electricity!

At 50 Pinecrest is still growing and changing, keeping the best of the past and while making thoughtful improvements to ensure a bright future. In a world that seems to spin faster and faster, this is a place keeps its own pace. Come for the impromptu potluck picnics by the pool and stay for the sound of campfire songs wafting in the distance. Pinecrest is 50 years old now, and with the leadership of the new owners (along with the creative participation of the site holders and community at large) it will continue to change and improve for another 50!

Ivaylo Getov, director of the movie POSE, was born in Bulgaria raised in Los Angeles, and is now living in New York City. He and his crew of 12 shot the movie at 3 locations: Pinecrest, Leo Carrillo State Beach, and New York City. The Pinecrest shoot involved hauling major set pieces & props, cameras, dollys, tracks and food and water up the steep hill to Timo Elliott's rustic site. Pinecrest Park managers Richard and Sydney were thanked in the movie credits for their all their help. Jayne Kennedy gave her permission for the film crew to use her trailer as a production office for the film, and they did.

The film was submitted to the SECRECT INTERNATIONAL OUTDOOR ARTS & FILM FESTIVAL (which is sometimes hosted at Pinecrest) and is being reviewed for possible inclusion in the festival, held June 11+12. Find out more about this film at the links on the bottom of this page.

THE PART OF THE PLOT THAT TAKES PLACE AT PINECREST:
A mysterious man named Nicola wakes up in a surreal wall-less cabin in the wilderness and knows nothing except that he must start walking. We return to his story at various points in Laylee’s narrative, picking up on him calmly trekking miles through the anonymous wilderness. Gradually he begins to question his drive to keep moving, but cannot think of any alternative. Only when he comes to the apparent end of his journey, seemingly walking to his own demise, does he realize that he could have taken control at any moment and turned back, but even at the final threshold he continues forward, disappearing forever.

Solar Concept Tent

Orange today revealed their vision for the tent of the future. Utilising cutting edge eco-energy technology, the Orange Solar Concept Tent will allow campers to keep in touch and power their essential camping gadgets.

The Concept Tent has been designed in association with American product design consultancy Kaleidoscope and builds on learnings from the original Orange Solar Tent that was trialled at Glastonbury in 2003, as well as 2004’s Orange Text Me Home Dome. Having worked closely with Glastonbury for the last eleven years, Orange know the importance of keeping in contact with friends while onsite and undertook this concept project to look at how the festival goers communication and power supply needs might be met in the future.

Photovoltaic Fabric

Latest research shows that by weaving specially coated solar threads into conventional fabric, revolutionary new ways of capturing the sun’s energy could soon become a reality. These radical advances mean that rather than relying upon familiar fixed panels, designers were free to conceive how a tent of flexible solar fabrics might look.

The Concept Tent’s solar shell uses this technology to full effect with three directional glides which can be moved throughout the day to maximise its solar efficiency, capturing the optimum amount of energy which can to be used throughout the tent in a variety of new and exciting ways.

Glo-cation technology

To avoid festival-goers ever losing their tent, the Concept Tent would be fitted with innovative “glo-cation” technology. Glo-cation works by enabling campers’ mobile phones to identify their tent using either an SMS message or automatic active RFID technology (a longer range version of that used in London Underground Oyster cards); both would trigger a distinctive glow in the tent helping identify it from a distance.

Wireless control hub

The heart of the Concept Tent is a central wireless control hub which displays energy generated and consumed as well as providing a wireless internet signal; all information is displayed on a flexible, touchscreen LCD display screen.

Integrated into the hub is a wireless charging pouch which powers mobile phones and other portable devices without the need for messy wires and multiple chargers. The ‘magnetic induction’ technology passes an electric current through a coil embedded in the charging pouch, this in turn generates a magnetic field which creates a charge and powers the battery.

Groundsheet heat

Also controlled by the central hub is an internal heating element embedded within the tent’s groundsheet; this under floor heating is triggered automatically once the interior temperature falls below a set level.

One Designer’s Love: Vintage Trailers

(Here's a story from the NY Times that may be of interest to fellow vintage trailer enthusiasts that was brought to my attention by Pinecrester, Lynn Reinstein.)

“LOLITA, light of my life, fire of my loins.”

So begins what may be literature’s greatest American road trip, Humbert Humbert at the wheel and young Dolores Haze at his side, fleeing propriety, legality and common sense into a deeply nondolorous haze. American writers have cooked up all kinds of metaphors for the United States, but it took the Russian-born Vladimir Nabokov to imagine it as a seductive teenage Lady Liberty in hot pants.
If the idea seems foreign to you, another foreigner — Bill Moggridge, the influential industrial designer and current director of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum — understands only too well.
“Being a European and brought up after the war, everything was a little bit hard,” said Mr. Moggridge, who was born in England in 1943. “Ordinary things were hard to come by. We didn’t have a TV. My parents couldn’t afford a car. Looking at America, at Hollywood, at the houses and cars, it all seemed so full of fantasy. Impossible fantasy. I don’t know that I necessarily thought it was good. I thought it was fantastic.”
So in the 1970s, Mr. Moggridge moved to California — not to Hollywood, but to Silicon Valley, where he designed, among other things, what is widely considered the first laptop computer, later becoming a founder of the design firm IDEO. In off-hours, though, he found himself gravitating to his teenage reveries of 1950s America, clad in what to him was the decade’s most magical substance: aluminium, as the British call it.
It’s amazing that aluminum was once considered so rare that, in possibly the grandest gesture of 1884, the crowning pyramid at the top of the Washington Monument was made of it. (It’s actually the third most common element in the earth’s crust.) Some 70 years later — when Lolita made her debut — aluminum was being fashioned into almost everything, from dishes, countertops and baseball bats, to boats, cars and entire buildings.
And, most heavenly to Mr. Moggridge, trailers. With Americans in thrall to their shiny new cars, and aircraft factories needing ways to keep business going, the aluminum trailer became one of the most iconic trophies of the decade. It was democratic, pragmatic and mobile, as well as misguided, preposterous and hopelessly optimistic: America, sealed in a can.
In the 1990s, when Mr. Moggridge and his wife, Karin, were building a house in the hills north of Palo Alto, Calif., he decided it was time to indulge. He started with an inexpensive Vagabond, then a Hughes Spartanette (made by Hughes Aircraft). But both trailers needed renovation, and Mr. Moggridge didn’t have the money, the skill or, frankly, the interest to get it done.
Through these misfires, he learned what he yearned for. Not merely a real 1950s experience, but a dream home on wheels, which in his mind looked less like a cheap Formica kitchenette and more like the beautiful wood cabinetry of a ship — historical accuracy be damned.
Then, one weekend about 10 years ago, he drove down the California coast to a gathering of vintage-trailer enthusiasts. (There are enthusiasts for everything.) There he came across a restored Southland Runabout, complete with lovingly done-up wood cabinets. He made a deal with the owner (which included unloading his Vagabond), and the Runabout was his. He took it home, and in an affront to both its name and nature, made it into a guest room.
It may be rather a surprise to find one of today’s most eminent designers with a soft spot for such a kitschy contraption. But Mr. Moggridge said that plenty of the lessons of design history are not part of the holy design dogma of FFF (that is, form follows function).
“When you go to designers’ houses, you see a lot of kitsch,” he said. “Instead of living the work they do, they like to see the exaggerated edges of how things can go. And kitsch has a kind of shameless enthusiasm that allows you to revel in these values, like excessive decoration or the overly bold use of color, that are not quite respectable.
“It’s the same sort of appeal as postmodernism, except kitsch is done with such self-consciousness. It’s fun for its own sake. You can’t say it’s elegant or beautiful, but you can say it’s a lot of fun.”
And, you know, it’s not the worst way of describing America, either.

Be a Good Neighbor!

Just because we vintage campers tend to be "interesting maverick individual" types, doesn't mean we want to go it alone all the live-long day! Sure we are up at Pinecrest to "get away from it all" and "have a little chill-time", but consider taking a few minutes to get to know your neighbor. Building community with this special group of people empowers us all.

Here are some easy tips!

Don't sneak up on your neighbor. Walk in view of him/her; even wave as you approach. This may sound obvious, but think about how freaked out you'd be to talk to someone who scared the living daylights out of you. As soon as you reach your new neighbor, introduce yourself in whatever way you feel comfortable. They will pick up the slack at this point and offer an excited, welcoming reply. Keep the initial conversation short and steered toward common ground: camping, trailers, neighborhood activities, things to do about town. Keep it light and fun, then be sure to watch for signs that your new neighbor is finished talking. Don't keep her there any longer than she wants to be there. And don't start asking invasive questions about your neighbor's personal or professional life or even where he or she is from (they aren't "getting away from it all" just so they can be reminded of it all). In good time, you'll learn more private details. A nice, quick conversation is best. Leave your neighbor thinking that you are relaxed, easygoing and someone he is going to look forward to running into at a later date.

Saying "Hi"! It's so easy! Saying "hello" is a lost art that needs to be brought back. Try this: When you are out and about and you encounter someone you haven't met say "Hi!", make eye contact and smile. If they feel like engaging in a little conversation they will pick up the ball and toss it in your court... if not just wave and keep on moving. Everyone's day is a little brighter.

Spruce up your outdoor space, and spend time there. Hang out on your porch, picnic table or fireside. Put a (tasteful) conversation piece in front of your camp: plant flowers or display some fun-funky art. Don't be shy. You'll find everyone at Pinecrest is pretty cool.

Practice common courtesies Tidy up for your neighbor (who may not have been up yet) after strong winds or a storm: stow their folding chairs back under the camper, or untangle their wind chimes for them. Help new comers and guests who might need a little assistance with awkward gear, backing a trailer into a site or tying down a tarp before a predicted wet week-end. (I bet they will do the same for you next time.)

Stroll. Post. Offer. Take an evening stroll around the block. Post a note on the clubhouse bulletin board inviting folks over for coffee one morning, or check it to see what others are up to! When you are heading into town, ask a neighbor if they need anything, this saves them a needless trip and builds a strong bond.

Short Film Shot at Pinecrest! Festival to be Announced.

Pinecrest site-holders Lynn Reinstein and Timo Elliott collaborated on the creation of an indie short film using Lynn's trailer and the natural beauty of her site. This project, entitled Something In The Darkness, is a dark-comedy-thriller made with a very dangerous looking gun and a good old fashioned yeti costume. Elliott & Reinstein (in collaboration with Ann Keniston) are also the co-founders of the First Annual International Secret Arts & Film Festival, which also took place at Pinecrest. They hope to present their new film, and others like it, at the next International Secret Arts & Film Festival again at Pinecrest, at a date to be disclosed as needed. Stay Tuned!

The Right Direction: 8 Steps To Make A Difference In The World

1. Everything - people, places, and situations - has something to say. Really listening, without interrupting or letting your attention wander, is the simplest way to learn and understand the needs of other people and of the world.

2. Volunteer your time or donate your money to a cause that touches your heart. Read to an elderly patient or buy new books for a veterans' home. Work at a soup kitchen or send a gift of food. No matter how big or small, your contribution will positively affect many people.

3. Embrace nature and beautify the world for others. To lift people's spirit, keep your garden bright, or plant and maintain flowers in a public area. Plant and donate a tree in somebody's name in your local park. As a gift to wild animals, make your yard animal friendly with dense hedges and by using natural pesticides.

4. Your energy affects others so choose to be a beacon of light. Project goodness, happiness, and peace outward through your home, neighborhood, country, and, finally the world. The effects are felt for thousands of miles.

5. Smile and the world smiles with you. When you catch a stranger's eye, flash a bright smile, even if you aren't feeling quite that happy. Your stranger may be confused, but their day (and yours) will be brighter.

6. Animals feel a lack of love as acutely as humans. Adopt a pet from your local shelter rather than purchasing one from a pet store. If your life can't include a pet, spend an afternoon volunteering at the animal shelter giving the animals some much-needed love.

7. Help improve someone's self-esteem or simply show them you care. Give a compliment, send a friendly letter, or tell someone you were thinking about them. Make an effort to keep in touch with long-time acquaintances and to develop new friendships.

8. Be a role model. Rather than asking others to alter themselves, change your own outlook and behavior. A role model can be a source of inspiration, hope, and self-respect. Or actively take on the responsibilities of a role model and reach out to children in need of guidance or an adult in need of a friend.

Fun Stuff to do when it's not so hot: Hike Cedar Falls.

Hike Cedar Falls to enjoy a romantic hike through the hills of Eastern San Diego. Be rewarded with waterfalls cascading into a pool below. Swim in the pool beneath the falls. The 100 foot high Cedar Falls is located southwest of Julian. You can make a day of it and stop for apple pie in Julian after your hike.

The best time to hike to Cedar Falls is in the spring or fall when the falls will be at their peak and it's not too hot. There is a swimming hole at the bottom of the falls where you can enjoy a swim, if you are a polar bear!

This can be a beautiful hike. Cedar Creek is a tributary of the San Diego River. There are a number of small falls in the area with Cedar Falls being the largest. Black oak, cedar, and cottonwood trees are common in the area. Bird watchers can spot local birds.

Directions from the town of Julian: Drive two miles west on Hwys. 78/79. Turn left on Pine Hills Road. Continue 1.5 miles. Bear right onto Eagle Peak Road. Continue 1.4 miles. Bear right to stay on Eagle Peak Road. Continue another 8.2 miles to the signed trailhead for the California Riding and Hiking Trail. This last 8 miles will be partly paved and partly dirt road. The trailhead is at the end of the road with a sign that says "Saddleback Trail".

You will need to get an Adventure Pass parking permit from the U.S. Forest Service because this hike is on National forest land.

Precautions: You do need to be in good shape for this trip. The hike to Cedar Falls is 4.5 miles roundtrip and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and bring plenty of water. 3 quarts of water per person is recommended during warm weather. The trip to the falls is downhill, which means the return trip is uphill. It is dangerous to climb on the rocks around the falls. Jumping or diving into the pools is prohibited.

Do you think that just because summer is over that you have to give up your weekend camping trips? With a little proper planning, you can camp well into the fall. For those of us that can take the cold, you can even camp during the winter months. During this time of year, the nice warm days make for a great time for the family to spend hiking and exploring the wilderness. The cooler nights are perfect for sitting around the campfire eating S’mores, playing board games, sharing stories and making music with your family, friends and new acquaintances. When the leaves start changing color the experience is even more worthwhile. So grab a sweatshirt, extra blanket, and a silly (but warm) hat... then head on out there to enjoy one of the best seasons of the year!

PS: If it get's a little too chilly, windy or rainy, you can always head down the hill for the day and warm up in Borrego Springs!

My favorite hour at Pinecrest pool is a zen experience. I'm all alone in the water, surrounded by green hills and azure sky. There's nobody on the deck watching me glide up and down the pool the long way. I count every length I swim, until I and the water are one and I forget about the count. At this point, I'm strong, not tired, and could go on all day. Oh! I wish I had all the time in the world.

If your timing is right...during the adult swim hours...a visit to Pinecrest pool can be a chance to meet and relax with old, or new friends. On a recent Friday afternoon I splashed around with Edie Seger and her daughter, Katherine, while catching up on the local news. Paths crossed often with members of the Holeman family, particularly Marilyn.

Some would rather not have kids around. I rather like seeing them having a good time at the pool. It reminds me of my childhood when I spent nearly every day in the pool, having fun by perfecting my strokes. Julian kids have good manners; marco polo and cannon ball battles are rare. They try to avoid crashing into someone like me who is gliding (I'm a slow swimmer) back and forth. The little ones are fun to watch as they paddle through the water wearing their inflatable wings. The first swimming lesson for some.

I can't say enough about the Pinecrest staff. All are friendly and helpful. When she's there, Sydney never fails to stop and chat, reminding me that the retreat is home to many vintage trailers. Perhaps it's the only such place in Southern California or beyond. As a longtime camper and RVer, I appreciate seeing those old rigs, so lovingly restored and well kept by owners half their age. I love those original classy Airstreams, Land Yachts, Wally Byam called them in the early days.

Although Palace Coach Co. advertised their newest models for 1944, they did not produce any until the war was over (See text of ad). These new models were supposed to be the latest thing in trailers for the post-war housing shortage. It was soon after this period that some folks started making their travel trailers their primary residence, and the age of the "trailer home" had begun.
Today, pre-fabricated homes are making a comeback on the green design scene, as many cool and modern designs are making a positive impact in the world of "small architecture".

Campers from the 40's, 50's and 60's are considered vintage. They are classics and evoke feelings of a time gone by. Many people choose to purchase a vintage model for the look and quality. Not only do they provide comfortable and convenient camping facilities, but they are also easy and inexpensive to maintain.

Vintage campers can be easily found online. There are multiple sites that specialize in selling and restoring these campers. There are also clubs dedicated to the restoration and use of these campers. People who use these types of trailers do so for a variety of reasons. Some people like the classic look while some want an economical way to camp in comfort. Others have no desire to use them for practical purposes and simply enjoy the restoration process.

The most popular vintage trailer is the Airstream They started producing these in 1932 out of wood and then changed to the aluminum models that are widely recognizable. Vintage campers can often be towed by smaller vehicles. This is not because they are lighter weight but because of the aerodynamic design and the weight distribution allows it to be pulled with greater ease.

Buying a vintage camper can be a lot fun but you should do plenty of research before deciding on one. Unless you are an experienced buyer, it is best to buy a camper in as good a condition as possible. Run down campers can take a lot of work to restore and can often times be more frustrating than you'd want. Continual work will increase the amount of time without its use and will also cost more money. Once a person gets some experience, they can then move on to more advanced work. However, it is better to start off small.

Before buying a vintage camper, think about why you want it and what it will be used for. This will determine the model and size of the camper you may need. Inspect the interior and exterior to determine the condition. Some wear and tear is expected and dents may be found on the exterior. But, it should still be in relatively good shape. Ask the seller to demonstrate the plumbing and refrigeration to ensure there are no leaks. Check the floors to determine if they are solid or if there may be rotting.Tires should be in adequate condition to at least tow it to where it will be stored during minor repairs.

After purchasing a vintage trailer, be sure to get it fully insured. Owning a classic piece of Americana can be a highly rewarding experience. It can also be a practical way to enjoy retro camping. If you like classic vehicles, this is a great option for spending time on restoration as well as having a great conversation piece to use for vacationing.

Trailer park in Julian is Vintage Escape!

For nearly 50 years, Pinecrest Resort has been a quiet mountain retreat

JULIAN — Driving down a narrow paved road off state Route 79 leads to a quaint trailer park nestled among stately oak trees.

Home to nearly 100 vintage travel trailers, somewhat more modern motorhomes and an occasional fifth-wheeler, Pinecrest Resort is a vintage trailer park on 85 acres. The park will reach a milestone next year when it marks 50 years of providing an escape for people who want to experience a few days of peace and quiet in the mountains.

Driving around the park, the solitude is evident. The privately owned sites are not crowded; there’s plenty of space for a trailer and room for a picnic area, lawn chairs and storage shed, as well as an area for parking a car.

The trailer park sits in a shaded canyon in the Cuyamaca Mountains, a few miles from the center of the town of Julian. Silver Airstreams, streamlined Prairie Schooners, mini Fans and the smaller Teardrops sit under the trees.

Pinecrest opened in 1961 and was limited to employees and their families from Convair and General Dynamics in San Diego. It sold in the mid-1990s and has been privately owned since then.

Frank Spevacek and his wife, Kathy Rosenow, have been the owners of Pinecrest since 2005. They moved to Julian from Santa Ana 13 years ago, and when they heard the park was for sale, they knew it was a project they wanted to undertake.

“We didn’t go out looking for a trailer park to buy, we kind of stumbled into it,” Rosenow said. “The other part of it is we always loved camping. When our kids were little, we learned quickly the best vacations were taking them out camping.”

The park sustained considerable damage from the Cedar fire in 2003, including the loss of 55 trailers and the previous owners’ house. About one-third of the park was damaged.

For the past five years, the main focus has been on cleaning up the park and replanting vegetation lost in the fire. One of the challenges is that the fire destroyed many of the older shade trees. Plantings have replaced some of the lost trees, but the owners also are working on shade designs for the sites.

“We will build shade structures where it was burned so badly,” Rosenow said.

Much of the work centers on finding ways to create more spaces and attract new owners. Site ownership currently is at its highest since the fire, with 110 sites sold. There’s room for 70 more.

Managers Sydney and Richard Fox are the only full-time residents, moving in when they became managers in 2004 for the previous owners, Dian and Stan Cornett. They first started coming to the park with their family in 1975 and purchased a site 19 years later.

“People who like the outdoors, and it’s not too fancy,” Sydney Fox said of the visitors who come to the trailer park. “It’s a place to go when it rains or snows. We love it.”

Many local residents take advantage of park facilities by joining the Swim Club, giving them daily access to the pool and yoga classes from June through September. Julian resident Bobbi Zane said she joined the Swim Club for the exercise.

“I’ve been so happy since I’ve been able to go to the Swim Club a couple of times a week … can’t beat the environment either, great mountain views, sometimes thunderheads in the sky,” Zane said.

While the park is for members who own their sites, there are a few trailers available to the public, or for members who may need extra space for overnight guests. This includes a 1968 Banner and a 1976 Automate, each with room to sleep two adults, while a 1976 Terry can accommodate a family of four.

1: Pay bills immediately.
As long as a bill is hanging out there in the unpaid category, it occupies mental space.

And because some native plants were lost due to the wild fires of the past, efforts are being made to re-establish these plants and trees. One of the great things about Pinecrest, and the few places on the map that are like it, is the unending community spirit. When you come down for a week-end you start bumping into folks you know and start getting the skinny on what's happen where. So-n-So has a few friends in town and is having a small bonfire around sundown,or What's-Her-Name has brought the waffle iron up and is hosting a little Coffee-n-Waffles fest tomorrow morning. It's a good way to get the know the people in the park and there are always some nice new surprise introductions. The rule of thumb is: buy one thing in volume on the way to the park, like a basket of apples or some other goodie, so you have something to offer the gang when it's your turn to host the party.

Pinecrest Expands: Three Mongolian Yurts Erected

Three authentic Mongolian yurts were purchased by Pinecrest owners Frank and Kathleen from a Hollywood production company who had intended to use them in a film. The Yurts will eventually be positioned in a cluster on a hillside overlooking the pool, with any luck. Two of the Yurts are smaller in dimension (perhaps 16' in diameter) and the third is quite large (perhaps 32' in diameter).

The large yurt was erected by Pinecrest members and friends on a sunny then cold day in January 2010 in the parking lot by to pool. This effort took all day, and by sundown all the participants were able to celebrate in the glory of a beautiful structure that did not exist 8 hours earlier.

Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) Cheap & Easy

Some frequently asked questions:

1. How do you harvest rainwater?
As amazing as it sounds, this is a question that comes up often. It must be theword harvest that is causing the confusion.

Per Webster’s dictionary harvest is defined as 1) to gather in or 2) to accumulate a store of. Consequently to harvest rainwater means to gather it in.

In my Great Aunt’s house in Maine, this was done with an old wood barrel. It was put beside the house and rainwater drained into it. We would use this water to drink, clean the dishes and everything else you can think of. Today it can still be caught with barrels, large and small, but I would advise against drinking it straight out of the barrel.

2. Where do you get the water?
Fortunately it comes FREE from the sky. They still have not figured out a way
to privatize rain yet. Although I am sure someone is actually thinking about
those air space rights.

3. What is the best way of harvesting rain?
Catch it in anything that holds waters. Many landscape or garden stores can
tell you where to buy barrels. Here in Austin we have a wide variety, with
some selling new barrels and other selling barrels that have been recycled. In
the Austin yellow pages I found them by calling a few landscapers and even one of the gutter installers advertised rainwater collection. Some cities offer
incentives, so also check with your local water company.

Once you have a container, simply put the barrel beneath where the rainwater runs off your roof and you have started harvesting.

Look for barrels that have a faucet attachment where you can attach a hose to use the captured water for your yard.

4. Why should I harvest rainwater?
Good question and probably the answer is going to be different for different folks. Some will like the idea of not paying the utility company for something that is FREE. Or maybe it is because rainwater is typically better for the plants. Or it could be that you don’t like big bond issues to pay for new water treatment plants. There are lots of possible reasons.

With me it was a little bit of all the above. But also it was a project I could do personally and knew it would have a net positive impact on the environment. My system makes me feel great when I am out watering or just looking at our
yard.

5. Do I need pumps to harvest rainwater?
Maybe. If you just have a small barrel and you are using an attached hose or
soaker line, no pump is likely required. If you have a barrel or tank that is
above ground level by a just a few feet, and you are on a flat piece of land, and have a small yard; probably no pump will be needed.

If your tank is at ground level and you need to move the water up any slope then you will likely need a pump.

However, sometimes you can get enough water pressure in a closed-looped water collection system to supply the pressure required, even to drive a sprinkler system. Consult a local specialist to determine what is going to work for you.

6. Can I use drip irrigation or soaker hoses with a rainwater?
Yes, but I recommend you install an inexpensive line filter.

Most irrigation stores sell inline sprinkler filters. This is a simple device that screws into the lines prior to your irrigation system and cleans out the large leaves and other stuff (i.e. sometimes referred to as particulates) out of the water so it does not clog your lines. Check out the vendors page for information on several inexpensive filters.

7. How big a yard can I water?
It depends, simple question with no simple answer. Can you have rain barrels at various places around the yard? How much rain can you capture? What type of plants do you have? How much do you want to spend on tanks?

The Austin Wildflower Center has 2 - 25,000 gallon (i.e. 7.5 - 94,625 liters)
tanks and 3 cisterns. They estimate they can capture up to 300,000 gallons
(i.e. 1,135,500 liters) a year and they estimate their system meets 10-15% of
their annual needs. The Austin Wildflower Center covers 279 acres and displays over 500 species of native plants and has become a popular destination for knowledge-seeking gardeners and nature-loving tourists.

As you can see, systems can be very large and water an extremely large area. It is just a matter of how much you really, really want to capture and how much you want to spend.

8. How big are rain barrels?
Thanks for the soft ball question, I needed it. Rain barrels vary in size from a few gallons/liters to about 100 gallons (i.e. 378 liters). Most barrels are around 50-60 gallons (i.e. 189 - 227 liters).

Rainwater tanks run from several hundred gallons/liters to many thousand gallons (i.e. 7,000 – 75,000 liters).

My tanks are about 2,000 gallons each (i.e. 7,570 liters each).

9. I want more pressure, how should I raise it?
Raising your barrel or tanks or by installing a pump. Every foot you raise your
storage tank increases the pressure about 0.433 psi or less because of pressure loss due to friction (1 psi ~ 3.21 feet of fresh water head). It generally takes only a few feet to be able to use a hose or drip system, but it takes a lot to run a sprinkler. Raising your rain barrel can be a quick and cheap way to increase your pressure.

10. Can I water my grass with rainwater?
Yes, but grass usually takes a lot of water. A typical lawn requires about 3,000 gallons (i.e. 11,355 liters) a month. This means you would need some large tanks to hold the water, especially in drier climates. Additionally, you would need a large surface area to capture the rain.

However, rain barrels can and should be used to augment your watering. This
will cut your watering bill and be better for your grass.

I recommend before going with big tanks to water your lawn you look at reducing your outdoor water consumption. Going to local vegetation, drought hearty plants and then installing either drip irrigation or soaker hose will reduce your water consumption. It will be less costly, since you then need smaller tanks.

But remember, rainwater is still free.

Ten Strategies to Promote Rainwater Harvesting

In the 1980s and early 90s, most people, especially in urban areas were unaware of what rainwater harvesting (RWH) meant and why there would be a need to collect rainwater. It took an enormous amount of effort working with and speaking to local communities, organizations and state agencies to publicize the need for and benefits of RWH. Based on my experience with RWH during the past 20+ years, I offer the following strategies that can be utilized to promote the technology in your respective state or region.

1. Education. Education includes both formal and informal instruction and learning. Formal education refers to classroom teaching in schools, vocational colleges and universities, while informal education involves the discussion of and seminars about RWH to citizens, local groups, and at community events. Both types of education are needed to promote RWH technology. Working with middle schools and high schools, and possibly through class projects, the benefits of RWH can be imbibed into the minds of young students, who in turn, can apply the technology at home with their parents. I have had experience with people contacting me for more information on RWH, because their children had first learnt about it at school.

Colleges and Universities must develop RWH courses for students in disciplines such as natural resources, environmental sciences, architecture and engineering. It is important to have young professionals with academic training in RWH to design such systems in their professional careers. The Texas Manual on Rainwater Harvesting is a good first source of material for developing RWH courses. Developing curricula in RWH for vocational schools will benefit those who intend to serve as technicians in installing and maintaining RWH systems. Lane Community College in Oregon is a good example of vocational instruction in RWH.

2. Training. For those already in the workforce, training courses such as those being offered by ARCSA can be very useful. The state land-grant universities have a vast network of engineering and agricultural/cooperative extension services in the country that can and should organize training in RWH. Since their primary role is to disseminate knowledge, this would be an ideal field in which to provide training. Again, the Texas Manual could be modified and applied to various States. National, state and local governments could also initiate training for their staff in order for them to become familiar with RWH. I had the pleasure of assisting with a short training program on RWH that was organized by the Canadian government, primarily to provide their environmental staff and others with information relating to RWH systems.

3. State and/or Regional Chapters of ARCSA. It would be very helpful to develop state or regional chapters throughout the country to focus on RWH in their respective areas. Local or regional organizations would be ideal in developing RWH publications and manuals tailored to their specific needs and climatic conditions. Local chapters can organize seminars, invite public officials and others to emphasize the value of RWH in meeting local water needs. In addition, State chapters and their members can communicate with local officials and their elected representatives in promoting RWH in their region. Also, regional organizations and their members can be invaluable in strengthening the knowledge base for ARCSA.

4. Demonstration Facilities. It is a good idea to install RWH systems at public facilities such as schools, libraries and community centers even if there is not much of a profit for the installer. Once people see the benefits of RWH, there will be enough publicity generated, and would likely help the installer in growing his or her business. In some cases, there may be limited funds available for capital expenses and not enough for labor, but that should not discourage those venturing into the RWH business. New businesses may have to invest many hours of volunteer effort in order to be recognized and to ultimately become successful.

5. Legislative Support. This is one key area that can help significantly in the growth of RWH in any particular region. Local chapters can hold seminars or demonstrate RWH systems, and invite legislators and other elected representatives to visit and become familiar. When we organized the first ARCSA conference in Austin, I was pleased that the then House Natural Resources Committee chairperson accepted our invitation to inaugurate the conference. Other legislators, a large number of state agency officials and local residents also attended the conference. Several legislative initiatives in support of RWH have been undertaken in Texas. These include Senate Bill 2, that provided sales tax exemption for all RWH equipment purchased in Texas, and House Bill 2430 that created a state RWH evaluation committee. Even as I write this paper, the omnibus RWH bill HB 1818 is being filed in the Texas state legislature today.

6. State Agency Assistance. Along with legislative support, it is necessary that the cooperation and assistance of state agencies be gained in support of RWH technology. All 50 States have government agencies that are responsible for water and environmental issues affecting their respective states. The Texas Manual on RWH published by the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) could be used as an example to obtain funding for similar publications from other state agencies. Inviting state agency officials to RWH workshops and conferences would be a good way to gain their attention and support.

7. Local Government Support. Similar to state agencies, most cities and many counties have departments that deal with water conservation and environmental issues. It would be helpful to meet with local government staff and convince them that RWH saves water, and that the technology can ultimately help the city in meeting their peak water demand. The City of Austin is a good example for promoting RWH. Their water conservation website is www.ci.austin.tx.us/watercon/default.htm

8. Availability of Credit. The RWH community should familiarize bankers and other mortgage lenders with RWH technology, so that they would be comfortable in providing loans to homeowners, when needed. Even if architects and engineers design a good RWH system, if a homeowner cannot secure a loan for his home and the RWH system, the project may be failure. It is therefore always a good idea to keep local lenders and their agents informed about RWH technology, by inviting them to seminars and demonstrations.

9. RWH Equipment Sourcing. Many customers prefer to purchase the equipment they need for their RWH system from a single source, rather than having to shop for components in various places. Unless a homeowner has plenty of free time available,
he or she would prefer a ‘turn-key’ type of job, where a single contractor completes the entire job. It is even better if a designer, equipment retailer and installer could work together in providing a complete RWH system that may be needed by a purchaser. The goal should be to make it easy for the purchaser to obtain and install his or her RWH system. This will go a long way in making RWH technology popular in a new area.

10. Cost Competitiveness. Regardless of how well a RWH system may be designed and installed, if the complete cost of the RWH system would be much higher than an alternative that is available to the owner, he or she may not choose the RWH system. RWH systems should be cost-competitive with well water systems as well as other surface water systems. As costs of municipal water increase, there may be a greater demand for RWH systems in urban locations. However, in order to popularize RWH systems in new areas, those involved in designing and marketing RWH systems should be willing to forego higher profit margins per unit, in favor of greater and more widespread demand for their products.

Notwithstanding all of the above, the single most important pre-requisite for promoting RWH is one’s absolute belief in and dedication to this technology. You should first convince yourself about the benefits of RWH, and then be able to convince others around you that this is a valuable yet inexpensive technology for the conservation of our precious natural resources.

First came the idea. Then came the late nights of Craigslist searching. And then it happened quickly: a trip to a derelict horse ranch in the Salinas Valley, an exchange of cash in an old barn, and a harrowing towing adventure up Highway 101 netted me my current abode—a 1959 Airstream travel trailer.

Tucked under couch cushions and linoleum panels, I found artifacts—mix tapes, scrawled recipes, and wrinkled photographs—that chronicled the lives of those who had dwelt within the Airstream since some stranger first purchased it in 1959 from Pacific Railroad Sales in Salinas, California. I was participating in American history by unearthing and updating one of its most iconic symbols in order to make it relevant to my age and time.

The renovation was necessarily an exercise in restraint and creativity. With just 150 square feet to work with, I jettisoned the 1950s colors of flesh tone paint and wall-to-wall linoleum, and moved in with cork flooring, track lighting, fresh colorful paint, and custom designed cabinets and furniture to fit the sinuous interior topography. I revealed the beautiful workmanship of the riveted aluminum end caps, and removed sewage facilities completely. I performed the work myself, trying to keep the design in my head one step ahead of the building process of my hands.

The materials palette that I chose is light in color with a few splashes of color. This lightness holds the space open and gives it a contemporary feel. The Airstream now resides in the garden of a co-op in North Berkeley, a few steps from the Cheeseboard and Chez Panisse.

My obsession with mobility, modularity, and affordability began long before the Airstream and has since extended beyond. As a recently self employed (read: laid off) landscape architect, I have been able to address several of the problems that I see in my field. Namely, the lack of connection between the LAND and the ARCHITECT. Whereas landscape architects once spent significant time ±on the site, the profession now finds some of the most creative minds shoehorned into cubicles. This seemed like a loss to me, and I wondered how it might be possible to create a space for real understanding within the profession—the kind of understanding that occurs from seeing a day of shadows move across a place, or listening to and observing people in a space.

I was intent on keeping the original stove, incorporating it into the cabinetry. I created a backsplash using inexpensive aluminum flashing that I texturized with a ball-peen hammer. With this in mind, and the knowledge that I gained by designing and building the Airstream, I set about creating a mobile studio that could travel to the site and where I could work during the early and critical stages of concept design. The studio had to allow me to be productive, but also put me squarely in the environment. It also had to be a showcase of my design sensibilities.

The interior is lit by several medium sized windows and an off-the-shelf track lighting system. With the door open, diffuse light makes the space glow. Some potential clients raise an eyebrow at the studio and walk away. Most, however, have been delighted. And those are the people I want to work for: they see the value of process, understand the subtleties that result from deep understanding, and want to engage with a designer as we surround ourselves in the medium.

What to do in Winter? Let's go the the Agua Caliente Hot Springs!

Wondering what to do at Pinecrest once the pool is closed and the temperature drops? Well, have I got a well kept secret for you! It's called the Agua Caliente Hot Springs, County Park. This is a great, easy day trip from Pinecrest. It's about a 45 minute drive through some of the most beautiful, most remote parts of the Anza Borrego Desert. Make sure you arrive early in the day and spend a few hours here as it takes some time for the minerals to soak and seep into you body and soul.

Seriously! This is a well kept secret, and let's keep it that way. Because it is a county park, for some reason nobody but well read German tourist seem to know about it.

HERE'S THE SKINNY: There are two pools: one indoors with warmer water and one outdoors with cooler water, but also a nice breeze of pure desert air. Also check out the somewhat primitive but restorative showers, located up by the outdoor pool.

Be sure to bring your own Spa Treatment Kit: including but not limited to nice soaps, salt scrub, mud/clay mask, some big fluffy towels and your own ipod, iphone or other musical device to add to the soothing experience (the inside pool can be loud when busy so headphones add a calming touch).

Soak in the water, sit in the sun and relax, then have a light picnic at one nearby picnic tables. Allow time to rest and regroup before rushing back up the hill to Pinecrest. If you do it right, you'll find you body will be tingling all the way home!

Here's a little more information:

Spring Synopsis: An indoor therapy pool and shallow, outdoor kids pool both fed by several warm mineral springs in the above hillsides. Located 111-miles northeast of San Diego.

Seasonal Accessibility: Open Labor Day to Memorial Day, elevation is 1,350 feet.Adult visitors can use the pools for $5 per adult.

Restrictions: Clothing is required.

Services: There’s a little store at the park entrance where you can get most things, including equipment for shuffleboard. The park also offers an amphitheater, horseshoe pit, picnicking, playground, restrooms and showers, a pavilion, hiking trails and dump station.

Additional Information: Soakers at Agua Caliente swore by the health benefits of the mineral water. One woman said that after spending a year and a half in a wheelchair due to arthritis, bursitis, and other ailments, she began making the trek from Yuma, AZ to Agua Caliente once a week. She would soak all morning, retire to the outdoor pool and do calisthenics, then back for another hot soak. Now she walks dances and does yoga, things she hasn’t been able to do for a decade. With a new lease on life she encourages others of the benefits from the mineral water at Agua Caliente.

Benefits of Native Plants

Native vegetation evolved to live with the local climate, soil types, and animals. This long process brings us several gardening advantages.

Save Water:
Once established, many native plants need minimal irrigation beyond normal rainfall.
Low Maintenance:
Low maintenance landscaping methods are a natural fit with native plants that are already adapted to the local environment. Look forward to using less water, little to no fertilizer, little to no pesticides, less pruning, and less of your time.
Pesticide Freedom:
Native plants have developed their own defenses against many pests and diseases. Since most pesticides kill indiscriminately, beneficial insects become secondary targets in the fight against pests. Reducing or eliminating pesticide use lets natural pest control take over and keeps garden toxins out of our creeks and watersheds.
Wildlife Viewing:
Native plants, birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and interesting critters are “made for each other.” Research shows that native wildlife prefers native plants.

White Sage grows wild on the hilltops of Pinecrest. We are lucky, because this plant can be choosy about where it likes to grow, is difficult to propagate and takes several years to mature. Please respect White Sage and all the native plants. Do not remove or damage these plants for the sake of an extra tent site or parking spot. Let's keep Pinecrest's native plants alive!

White Sage can be a slow growing, difficult to establish plant that can take up to three years to reach a mature size. The plant above is a three year old pictured in spring. The body of the plant gets to be two to three feet tall and can spread eight feet or more. The flower wands will add two to five feet to the height and will have tiny insignificant looking white flowers that are dotted with lavender. At least they are insignificant to us, to the bees they are heaven, which it is why it is sometimes referred to as bee sage. White Sage has highly aromatic, waxy gray leaves that are used for incense.

Native Americans have used white sage for centuries and continue to use it today. White sage has been used traditionally to purify the mind, body and spirit before praying. Native Americans also used white sage in ceremonies of birth and death. Sacred objects such as pipes and eagle feathers were passed through the smoking of burning white sage in order to purify them.

When clearing the land of dry brush and weeds for fire safety, be mindful of the plants that should never be removed: native american plants such as the white sage.

Everybody makes their trailer their own through a combination of personal nick-nacks, candles, cozy-comforters, easy to move chairs, photos, art and every quirky specialty item that "doesn't quite fit at home". Every trailer also needs some kind of instrument lurking in a corner, or at least a ka-zoo tucked away in the kitchen drawer.
Weekends are for resting, cooking, cocktails, bird watching, raking leaves, moving rocks, painting, planting, watching the sun set and the moon rise, slowing down, and enjoying the company of loved ones.

For decades, trailer parks have been increasingly marginalized to a strict set of stereotypes. They might gleam as well-manicured retirement communities to some, but in their most iconic state they are perceived as the province of the unfortunate. The question of whether design can save or even improve trailer parks is preempted almost immediately by “Why bother?”

The latter question is easier to answer. Allan Wallis, author of Wheel Estate: The Rise and Decline of Mobile Homes and an authority on regional housing, calls trailer parks an undervalued, endangered resource. “Hundreds of thousands of living spaces” have been zoned out of existence, Wallis says, warning that “we are losing a certain niche in the housing market that the market left on its own would not really replace.” Trailer parks, he explains, put workforce housing where communities desperately need it. Drive these inhabitants to suburbia’s outer rings, and freeways get clogged while households become severely strained by car and gas payments. Wallis welcomes innovative design: Trailer parks could use a face-lift. “You need to create a visually attractive package,” he says. “I would ask the designers of the iPod, ‘Could you do that for a mobile home?’”
